A blog about my daughter growing up and facing the joys and challenges of growing up with Down syndrome and Tetralogy of Fallot while enjoying the love of a rough older brother. (Look how purple her feet were before her heart repair.)

Stuffy nose
I am so blessed in that Penelople rarely has a stuffy nose. I know a lot of her friends have had their adenoids taken out. But not Penny.
So on the rare occasion that she has a stuffy nose from the weather or a cold or what have you, she is an agry beast. I feel so bad shen she can't sleep due to her stuffy nose. Poor baby.
What kind of tricks do you try to get your little ones clear for the night?

We use alot of saline spray/drops. Like Ocean Drops in the pharmacy, but we get the generic. I use it every morning and every night with the girls, and more frequently if they're congested. It helps them NOT get things that are airborne and it helps to clear them out when they do get a runny nose. I put a couple drops in each nostril, then change a diaper or something while it settles in, then we suction if there's stuff in there that needs to get out. Sometimes we do two rounds of that. Braska handles it well, Kinlee...well, it's a battle, for sure.
Oh, and we also use a cool mist humidifier when they are congested and that seems to make a big difference for Braska. Thankfully, she's only had congestion maybe 4 or 5 times in her 3 years. Yay!
Good time to give tips to avoid the flu this year:
1. Frequent hand washing
2. Avoid touching the face
3. Frequent hand washing
4. Saline drops in the nose morning and night
5. Frequent hand washing
6. Gargle with salt water or Listerine twice a day
7. Frequent hand washing
oh...and did I mention Frequent hand washing?
the virus needs to proliferate to cause problems. Gargling and nose spray helps to prevent the proliferation...and of course, the handwashing and avoidance of facial touching prevents getting the virus to land where it can proliferate!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
